Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) is released via the pituitary gland which stimulates the ovary to produce around 5-20 follicles which each house an immature egg
The growth of the follicles also stimulates the thickening of the lining of the uterus. This lining becomes rich in nutrients in preparation for possible pregnancy
One follicle will mature into an egg while the others die and are reabsorbed by the body, usually at around Day 10 of a normal 28 day cycle
The maturing follicle increases the production of estrogen and signals the pituitary gland to slow FSH production
Estrogen levels are at their highest which is great for energy levels, strength, performance and muscle growth. The risk of injury can also be higher due to increased estrogen
Increased insulin sensitivity during this phase allows us to utilise carbs better, so this is a good time to increase carb consumption
Higher estrogen levels have a positive effect on metabolic rate and satiety. We are more inclined to make better food choices and/or adhere to a more disciplined style of eating during this phase
