PART 5
PHASE 4-LUTEAL PHASE: Day 15-28
The corpus luteum (follicle that released the egg) releases progesterone during this phase to prepare the body for potential pregnancy
Progesterone increases body temperature as it continues to thicken the endometrial wall ready for pregnancy
If there is no pregnancy detected, the corpus luteum deteriorates and progesterone production stops. This signals he body to shed the lining of the wall and the menstruation phase commences
The rise in progesterone levels increase metabolic rate and basal body temperature. This results in an increased appetite and a decrease in our insulin receptors causing higher insulin resistance. For this reason, it is better to eat higher protein and higher fats during this phase for a more stable energy release and better satiety after meals
During this phase our energy levels are lower as a body prepares for pregnancy. Higher levels of progesterone can also cause PMS symptoms such as fatigue, irritability, mood swings and anxiety. A decrease in training intensity may be needed.
