One in eight women will develop thyroid problems during her lifetime. Continuing on from my previous post on this topic, here are some other common thyroid problems that can affect women:
Hyperthyroidism
Also known as over-active thyroid, causes your body to make too much thyroid hormone causing your metabolism and heart rate to speed up, weight loss without eating less food, an increase in appetite, anxiety, increased body temperature and changes to your menstrual cycle. The most common cause of hyperthyroidism is Graves’ Disease which is an immune system disorder.
Thyroiditis
Is inflammation of the thyroid and is caused when the body’s immune system makes antibodies that attack the thyroid.
Thyroid Goiter or Nodules
A thyroid goiter is an enlarged thyroid gland which can cause swelling in your neck. It is a common symptom of Hashimoto’s disease, Graves disease, and Thyroiditis.
A thyroid nodule is the swelling in one section of the thyroid gland. It may be solid or filled with blood and can be one nodule or many. Thyroid nodules are very common and some nodules can cause hyperthyroidism.
