THE BRAIN - PART 6

Carbohydrates and the Brain

Carbohydrates are the primary fuel source to the body and therefore the brain also.

Often carbohydrates are villainised as detrimental for fat loss however macronutrient splits are very individual to each person and for women in particular carbohydrates are very important in the production of oestrogen.

The type of carbohydrates is what makes the biggest difference. Complex carbohydrates such as rice and sweet potato take longer to digest and provide a steadier source of brain fuel compared to simple carbohydrates such as lollies and soft drinks.

They also help in the regulation of blood sugar levels. Wholegrains, fruits and vegetables are also packed full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants which help protect brain cells.
